Data from the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) indicate that more and more people are turning to hair restoration procedures than ever before. At Vinci Hair Clinic, we know that you’re not just concerned about the numbers, but also about the people behind the numbers. Many who come to us for help confronting the challenges of hair loss are interested in how other people on the same journey think and feel about their hair. Luckily, the ISHRS also conducts surveys to find out just that.
The most recent ISHRS survey was conducted in 2010; about a third of the participants were women, and two-thirds were men. Seventy-seven percent of the participants were between the ages of twenty-one and fifty, with some as young as eighteen, and others over sixty. Though the majority lived in the United States, ISHRS surveyed participants from all over the world to figure out just how people feel about losing their hair.
Unsurprisingly, over 80 percent of participants didn’t feel very good at all about hair loss. They reported that it made them feel “less attractive,” “self-conscious,” “older,” and “less confidant.” Part of what makes our jobs at Vinci Hair Clinic worthwhile is helping people to change those feelings. We want you to feel more attractive, younger, and more confidant! While four percent of survey participants reported being unconcerned about their hair loss, it’s safe to say that if you’re bothered by thinning hair or a balding head, you’re in the majority.
In fact, hair is so important to people that over 70 percent of survey respondents reported that given the choice, they would trade treasured personal possessions to get their hair back. When you see as many patients as we do, this isn’t very surprising. Hairstyles are much more than objects you can buy or sell; for most of us, they’re a part of our identities. When the person you see in the mirror each day suddenly changes, it’s completely normal to feel disconnected from yourself and less satisfied than you did before. The deeper reason more and more people turn to hair restoration procedures each year is so that they can feel like themselves again––and at Vinci Hair Clinic, we’re dedicated to helping you do just that.
