These signs of damage can take a real toll on your appearance and knock your confidence. Take action now with our 5 top tips to repair damaged hair.
Give split ends the chop
Split ends can advance up the hair strand, causing weakness and breakage if left untreated. Although hair product manufacturers promise to fix split ends, serums and conditioners only provide a temporary solution. Get those split ends trimmed every six weeks or so to stop the problem in its tracks.
Say “No!” to sun damage
Excessive exposure to the sun’s UV rays causes dry brittle hair and will make tinted hair fade more quickly. When spending time outdoors, cover your hair with a hat or head-scarf, and apply a hair treatment which includes UV filters for extra protection.
Cleanse away build-up
Build-up from hair products and hard water leaves hair looking lacklustre and can cause breakage. Most people will benefit from using a clarifying shampoo monthly. You can also cleanse away build-up with an apple cider vinegar rinse or bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) treatment.
Hydrate with a hair mask
Use a deep conditioning hair mask weekly to counteract the effects of everyday wear and tear on your locks. There are many different hair masks on the market, but you’ll need to find one that suits your hair type – ask your hairdresser if you are unsure. The right conditioning mask will leave your hair shiny and soft without causing greasiness.
Nourish with hot oil treatments
Use hot oil treatments, between one and three times monthly depending on your hair type, to defend from future breakage. After washing, apply coconut, jojoba, sweet almond or another oil of your preference. Cover your hair in plastic film or a shower cap, and apply gentle heat with your hair dryer (or wrap with a warmed towel). When your hair cools, rinse thoroughly – you may need to use a mild shampoo to remove all oil residues.
