At Vinci Hair Clinic, we’ve seen countless lives transformed by hair transplant surgeries. Hairline restoration could change your life, too. The November 2016 edition of Aesthetic Surgery Journal recently published news about successful body hair transplants being performed at the University of California in Los Angeles. We hope that more and more people will qualify for this procedure. Many people are likely wondering how the procedures and equipment for body hair transplants differ from traditional transplants, and we’re here to provide the answer.

People don’t qualify for traditional hair transplants if there are no healthy donor regions left on their scalp to provide donor follicles. This means that body hair transplants tend to require more grafting than traditional transplants to fully restore all the scalp regions. According to the Cosmetic Surgery Times[i], a body hair transplant requires eight- to nine-hour operation sessions, dependent on the individual patient’s needs.

In the Aesthetic Surgery Journal paper, Dr. Sanusi Umar reported using hypodermic needles with a modified tip called the UPunch Rotor to perform graft extractions. The tips of these needles are flared outward to minimize damage and injury to hair follicles during the procedure. For gray hairs, however, Dr. Umar used 18-guage needles because the smaller needles risk follicle disruption when used to remove gray hairs.

After extraction, the body hair follicles required hydration, which Dr. Umar accomplished with a piece of wet gauze. Some body hairs separate from the tissue after extraction, and so Dr. Umar created his “FUE swipe maneuver” to remove these damaged follicles. To promote healing in the donor regions, Dr. Umar rubbed wet gauze over the donor areas just after extraction and instructed patients to coat the areas with Neosporin ointment for seven days after the operation.

At Vinci Hair Clinic, we hope that the successes achieved by Dr. Umar will soon translate into increased numbers of people qualifying for hair transplant surgeries. We understand the difficult journey of balding.

We are dedicated to providing options for people who want to restore their hairlines. Contact us today and schedule a consultation to learn more about how we can help you begin the hair restoration process.
