On February 7, 2016, San Marino High School senior Christina Chang noticed a bald spot on her head. As published in a recent San Marino Tribune article, Christina told reporters that discovering the patch of skin on her head “was a terrible experience.” She continued, “My hair was something I was really confident in. It kind of felt like my femininity was being stripped away from me.” At Vinci Hair Clinic, countless female patients have recounted to us the hardships of hair loss. For women, hair loss is a taboo subject. Women experiencing hair loss are often left to struggle through it alone.

After experiencing more hair loss and erratic sleep patterns, Christina Chang visited her doctor to investigate what was happening. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Alopecia Totalis. These two autoimmune diseases often occur at the same time, causing hair loss and numerous other symptoms. Her doctors had trouble isolating a single cause for her hair loss, making it difficult to find a single cure. As she lost more and more hair, Christina finally decided to shave all her hair off, and she found the experience quite liberating.

Three months later Christina’s hair began to suddenly grow back. Doctors were surprised. Christina’s immune system began to spontaneously rebuild itself, enabling her to recover from the debilitating symptoms of the autoimmune disorder. She feels much better, but she’s worried about the future. Christina explained, “Since the cause of the whole ordeal is still unable to be pinpointed, there is a chance of relapse.”

Like Christina, many people’s hair loss can’t be completely explained. Hair loss can occur suddenly, whether they’re young, old, male, or female.
