Androgenetic alopecia, male pattern baldness or male pattern hair loss, is a common type of hair loss. It can start in the early teens or twenties, and is caused by a combination of male sex hormones and genetics.
Men usually start noticing they are losing hair when they see a receding hairline, a thinning at the crown of the head or across the entire scalp. Often, male pattern baldness leaves sufferers with a horseshoe shape of hair around the sides, with no hair at the front or crown. However, the rate and location of hair loss varies widely between individuals.
Hair loss stages are categorized using the Hamilton-Norwood scale, a standard created by James Hamilton and updated by Dr. O’tar Norwood. It tracks male hair loss from the initial stages to total baldness.
The Hamilton-Norwood scale identifies the following stages of men hair loss:
At Stage 1, you will have what is essentially an adolescent hairline. The hairline, in most cases, extends to the upper brow crease with no signs of hair loss at either the crown or hairline.
At Stage 2, there is a development to an adult hairline. It is visibly sitting above the upper brow crease and very mild hair loss appears at the front of the hairline.
Stage 3 is when the first signs of hair loss become noticeable, as the hairline starts receding at the temples.
At Stage 4 the hairline is visibly receding at the front of the temples and the forehead. There is increased hair loss at the crown., butthe sides of the head still have thick hair growth.
At Stage 5 hair loss starts getting more severe with hair on the hairline and crown getting noticeably thinner.
At Stage 6 there are only a few strands of hair between the front of the head and the crown, creating a horseshoe shape around a bald patch in the centre of the scalp. More hair loss is also noticeable at the side of the head.
Stage 7 is the most advanced stage of hair loss with only sparse hair remaining at the back and sides of the head.
