People have been struggling with baldness for thousands of years, but it’s taken us a long time to figure out its real causes. At Vinci Hair Clinic, we think it’s important for people to understand the causes of different types of baldness so that they understand the available solutions. While there are a variety of medical conditions that cause balding, the most common cause is pattern baldness in men and women, which is a genetic inheritance from parents. Did you know that in the 1800s, many people believed falsely that baldness was caused from wearing hats? Lately, we’ve been reading Kerry Segrave’s Baldness: A Social History to figure out how people thought about and treated baldness in the past. We were surprised to find out that for a long time, people actually thought hats were causing their hair to disappear!
In 1868, a scientist named Dr. A.F.A. King published an article in a medical journal about hats and hair. He argued that hats compressed the veins in the scalp, leading to a decrease of blood flowing to the hair. According to King, baldness occurred in different patterns for different people because everyone’s head is shaped differently, and so hats cut off circulation differently on people’s heads. Because of Dr. King’s article, lots of people stopped buying hats in an effort to prevent hair loss. In the 1880s, hat designers actually started changing hat designs in an attempt to recover customers! It wasn’t for another fifty to sixty years before people figured out that hats have nothing to do with pattern baldness––the real culprit is the genes that each of us inherit from our parents.
People have had all sorts of strange ideas about what causes baldness in the past––but each of their mistaken theories and scientific missteps helped us to figure out the actual causes of balding and what can be done about it. At Vinci Hair Clinic, we offer evidence-based procedures, like hair transplant surgeries that have worked for hundreds of thousands of people around the world. For those who don’t qualify for surgery, we offer scalp micropigmentation procedures to accurately mimic the appearance of hair.
