In the United States alone, an estimated 20 million people have a thyroid condition and more than half of them are undiagnosed. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain and hair loss. Could your thyroid be making your hair fall out?
What is the thyroid?
The thyroid is a gland located in the neck. It is responsible for producing the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. These hormones are used to ensure normal cell function throughout the body. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid secretes too little thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism is due to excess thyroxine production.
How do thyroid conditions affect hair growth?
Severe hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause diffuse hair loss, resulting in patchy, thin hair growth. Hair loss tends to start a few months after the thyroid condition develops. This is a good reason to get any unusual excess hair shedding checked out by a specialist as soon as possible. Starting treatment early is preferable with thyroid imbalances and many other conditions that cause hair loss.
An important point to note is that many people mistakenly blame thyroid medicines for causing their hair loss and stop taking them. Hair loss caused by thyroid medication is, in fact, very rare. If you are already receiving treatment for a thyroid condition, be aware that stopping taking it is likely to make your hair loss and any other symptoms worse.
What can be done to treat thyroid-related hair loss?
Hair will usually regrow when a thyroid condition is under control. However, the hair may never return to its former thickness and the regrowth may be a different texture or colour. Such changes in one’s appearance are distressing but there are solutions available to help.
