While the most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, stress can also take its toll – as actor Jack P Shepherd recently revealed to fans.
Hair Loss After Stress
The actor, who plays the role of David Platt on the popular British TV soap “Coronation Street” decided to open up about his hair loss after being criticised online. A viewer took to Twitter to mock Shepherd’s hairstyle, which has changed noticeably over the last year. The 30-year-old replied with a Tweet explaining to the rude commenter that his hair loss was stress-related. In 2017, he wrote, his 15-year long relationship with Lauren Shippey had ended and he’d gone through a period of high emotional strain. Shepherd ended his message apologising for his changed appearance. Fans responded to the Tweet with positive feedback, telling the actor that he didn’t need to explain and wishing him well.
How does stress cause hair loss?
Hair loss caused by stress is called telogen effluvium. When we experience intense or sudden stress, the body reacts by interrupting non-essential processes – one of which is hair growth. The changes in the hair growth cycle generally become obvious around 3 months after the stressful event. At this stage, sufferers start to notice that they are shedding large amounts of hair and getting thinner on top. For most people, it takes around another 3 months for the hair growth cycles to return to normal.
There are no treatments that stop active hair loss caused by telogen effluvium, but people with this condition usually find that their hair grows back by itself with time. However, there are things that you can do to support and speed up the natural process of hair regrowth. The first step is to consider consulting with a hair loss professional to confirm that you have telogen effluvium. Other hair loss conditions require distinct treatment and it is best not to waste time on the wrong approach. When you have the correct diagnosis, you can then consider using treatments that promote healthy hair growth such as using the LLLT Laser Cap and Vitruvian Line vitamin and mineral complex, both available from Vinci Hair Clinic.
