In the African American community, the relationship between women and their hairstylists is treasured and cultivated according to a recent Women’s Magazine article[i] examining the relationship between Michelle Obama and her hairstylist, Johnny Wright. Johnny served as her hairstylist during the eight years that Michelle lived in the White House with her husband, then-President of the United States, Barack Obama. At Vinci Hair Clinic, we follow celebrity fashion so we can bring you the latest and greatest in hair trends. During her husband’s presidency, Michelle became a fashion icon for her various, elegant hairstyles––all of which were the work of Johnny Wright.

Like Michelle Obama, Johnny Wright grew up in Chicago. His interest in hair styling started at the age of 12 and was inspired by his grandmother, who styled hair until the age of 91. Johnny started by paying attention to hairstyles he saw in magazines, on television, and walking down the street. He told Women’s Magazine, “I remember seeing a French roll on a woman and I just knew that I knew how to do it. I bought all the materials and tried it on my mom. She wore a French roll to church and everyone wanted to know who did her hair and how they could get their hair done like that.”

Johnny brought unmatched expertise and style with him to the White House, giving the First Lady a wide range of elegant hairstyles. Johnny’s work has helped Michelle expand the public imagination of the possible ways black women can wear their hair, inspiring girls and women across the country to try out new hairstyles. Johnny told Women’s Magazine that he designed each of Michelle’s hairstyles to say something about her personality. He told the magazine that Michelle’s hair reflects her “confidence, resilience, and boldness––it says that she lives her life out loud.”

At Vinci Hair Clinic, we admire the hard work Johnny Wright put into styling Michelle Obama’s hair for eight years. We hope our female clients look to Michelle Obama as an inspiration for how to style their own hair. At Vinci Hair Clinic, there are solutions for female hair loss.
