Read this blog to learn about the science of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy as a hair loss treatment.

 How PRP Therapy Works

PRP was developed in the 1970s and is used in many medical fields. To understand the science of how it works, we need to take a closer look at the PRP solution. This is made from the patient’s blood – but only one component of the blood is used. This is the plasma, which is separated from the red blood cells using a centrifuge machine. The plasma carries an abundance of platelets, which contain growth factors and cytokines. These substances stimulate cell growth and enhance the healing process, which is why PRP is highly-favoured by professional sports-players when recuperating from injuries. When injected into areas of hair loss, the growth factors increase hair growth and promote hair cell regeneration.

PRP Therapy Studies & Research

Over recent years, there has been more research on PRP Therapy. In 2014, a study found that even hair loss sufferers who did not respond to minoxidil or finasteride treatment experienced improvement with PRP. A clinical trial performed in 2015 rated patient satisfaction with the treatment as high, while a 2018 review of scientific literature found that the evidence supported PRP as a safe and effective hair loss treatment.

The latest findings were presented at the 2019 American Society for Dermatologic Surgery annual meeting. The speaker from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai told attendees that their research had been focused on women who had androgenetic alopecia. Study participants received PRP injections at week 0, 4 and 8. Improvements in hair calibre (strand thickness) and density of growth was noted when the participants were examined at 8 and 24 weeks. This led the researchers to summarise that monthly PRP Therapy sessions can help to treating female hair loss.
