From shampoo and lotion to medication and dietary supplements, many products claim to slow the progress of male pattern baldness and even regrow hair. The sheer variety of solutions available can be confusing and make it difficult to decide which is the best treatment for you.

What is male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness is also known as androgenetic alopecia. It is a common condition that occurs in 40% of men by age 35 and 65% of men by their 60s. The reasons why some men experience androgenetic alopecia and some don’t are not fully understood. We do know that inherited genes are a significant factor. Men whose family members have androgenetic alopecia are more likely to develop the same pattern of hair loss.

Treatments for male pattern baldness

There are only two drugs that are clinically proven as effective in treating androgenetic alopecia: finasteride and minoxidil. Finasteride is an oral medication that was approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern balding in the 90s. Minoxidil was also approved by the FDA around the same time. It is a liquid which is applied directly to the scalp and is available without a prescription. These hair loss treatments need to be used daily and the results are not instantaneous. With finasteride, it can take about 3 months to see the effects. Minoxidil can take up to four months to produce results. Both medicines need to be used daily to work properly and any results will reverse when use discontinues.

A more recent innovation in treating male pattern baldness is LLLT Low-Level Laser Therapy. LLLT utilises the latest laser technology to direct light at the hair follicles and can stimulate hair growth. It can be used alone but is particularly effective in combination with minoxidil or finasteride, or to enhance the results of hair transplant surgery.
