Hair loss was once an issue that was mainly associated with old age. However, research from China has shown that balding has become an increasing concern amongst men under 40. In this blog, we look at the findings and discuss what can be done to prevent premature hair loss.
Chinese Men Going Bald Younger
In 2018, Tsinghua University in Beijing surveyed over 4,000 of its students. As many as 60% of them had experienced some degree of hair loss. This number is particularly high compared to the average figures of around 25% of men showing some signs of hair loss at age 21 and 35% at the age of 35. Some of the reasons suggested for the prevalence of hair loss in young Chinese men are societal changes, stress, insomnia and unhealthy lifestyle choices.
The Causes of Premature Hair Loss
These statistics from China not only highlight the high proportion of hair loss sufferers in that region, but flag up some issues that can affect people from anywhere in the world. While male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is partly controlled by genetics, it is known that factors such as stress and a nutritionally-deficient diet can trigger the condition at an earlier age. The study findings serve a good reminder to all of us to relax, eat well and maintain a healthy daily routine.
