What is telogen effluvium and how can it be treated? In this guide, we answer these and other questions about this hair loss condition.

What is telogen effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is a hair loss condition that results in diffuse shedding from the entire head. It develops three months after a trigger event, such as stress or hormonal changes. The trigger event causes an interruption in the hair growth cycle, moving the hair from the anagen (growing stage) to the telogen (shedding) stage. The excessive shedding can last for around six months before the hair growth cycle returns to normal.

Telogen effluvium is most commonly diagnosed in women aged between 30 and 60 years, however, men can also develop the condition. If you think you have telogen effluvium, it is important to get a professional diagnosis to confirm the cause and ensure that another condition is not to blame.

What causes telogen effluvium?

The causes of telogen effluvium are diverse. Sudden or chronic stress are closely linked with the condition and people who develop the condition can often identify a specific event that occurred around three months before. The condition can also be triggered by severe illness, major surgery and medication. Other factors that are recognised triggers are hormonal changes, extreme weight-loss and strict or limited diets.

Vinci Hair Clinics, the leaders in hair restoration, are experts in treating all types of hair loss. They offer a variety of telogen effluvium treatments that can help to stimulate the hair follicles and assist in stabilising the hair growth cycle. A good starting point is the Vitruvian Line nutritional complex, a vitamin and mineral supplement which contains everything your body needs to support healthy hair growth. Vitruvian Line can be used alongside Vinci’s medical hair restoration solutions, such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy and Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). PRP Therapy is an innovative technique which uses scalp injections of a plasma solution created from the patient’s blood and can improve hair and scalp health.
